It's ok. At the rumored $1300 street price, they won't sell any of them anyway.

Just release 8TB per SSD nos, at the price range of 100usd or så, i'm tired of waiting for nothing.

Flash manufacturers have just decided that NAND is already cheap enough, and have slowed production. You'll be waiting a long time. Long live spinning rust!

These counterfeit SKUs are getting out of hand.

But you gotta admire their chutzpah!

Do they mean the 970 EVO PLUS 2TB SSD that is supposed to be released this month? This is April 29 evening but still no sign of release.

So is this like the $3 128GB microSD cards from aliexpress that are really 8GB cards with a firmware hack to trick the OS into seeing a larger drive? I'll have to side with Samsung for now and not believe the other sources, even if one isn't Chinese.

And for some reason the 2tb PM983 datacenterdrive is still there for 400 euro's. I keep hovering pointer over the buy button.

Just buy it. Flash products will get more expensive in the future since they throttled down the production.

I don't think any manufacturer has stated they're cutting overall production. What's happening instead is that they have have adjusted (down) expansion plans, and are stopping production on older tech with fewer layers as new more efficient production lines come available (instead of running them both concurrently).

The PM981/PM983 is TLC-based like the 970 EVO. The reason it's difficult to field a 2TB 970 Pro is because Samsung's drives are single-sided with two NAND packages. At 16DP this requires denser, 512-Gbit/die NAND (as in the 2TB 970 EVO), which is more costly. There is no MLC-based SM981 as the market is moving away from MLC anyway.
  • NewMaxx - Tuesday, April 30, 2019 - link

Note, when I say MLC I mean 2-bit MLC and when I say TLC I mean "3-bit MLC."
  • PixyMisa - Tuesday, April 30, 2019 - link

And if that's not confusing enough, TLC has eight levels.
  • NewMaxx - Tuesday, April 30, 2019 - link

    Right, 2^3 = 8 voltage states as opposed to MLC's 2^2 = 4.

How would you connect three hundred and fifty of them?

And laptops beware - its the 110mm length type.

I'm more interested in the 2TB 970 Evo Plus which we were told would be coming in April.
  • modeonoff - Tuesday, April 30, 2019 - link

This is the end of April but there is no news yet. I returned two unopened 970 EVO 2TB bought during boxing day sale. Waited for four months and there is no sign of coming. Asked Samsung several times but they have no idea when it will be available. If there is a delay, they should announce it rather than keeping people waiting and waiting. Very annoyed.

These aren't the droids you're looking for....

Then again, on Samsung's own site:
