I bet this will sell just as well as the Venue smartphones.

"The only disappointing part thus far is both of the announcements came from traditional PC OEMs..."

It's not quite obvious what is so disappointing about that.

So, two tablets. Which OS do they use?

Because these companies have zero track record of making compelling mobile devices. ASUS is debatable, but their non-Nexus Android tablets have sold terribly.

He's saying that design wins from mobile players like Samsung, et al, would be more interesting.

Asus has a quite long track record for windows tablet (Anyone remember EP121?)

Intel has not realized that only traditional PC OEMs will buy Bay Trail, other manufacturers do not want the old Intel dominance but inexpensive (or even expensive, it does not matter !!) ARM socs just to be free from the old Big Devil. Intel needs to change its way to think and it needs to realize that its long term destiny is like a Big Foundry......with some production of its own cpus obviously.

It is *far* too early to count Intel out of the smartphone/tablet SoC market. They spent years ignoring it, and in the short time since they started paying attention, Intel's products have *significantly* closed the gap on ARM in terms of both performance and power consumption.

    LOL nope.

Companies don't make decisions like this. Intel doesn't have any good design wins because their products don't (yet) hit the price/power envelope you have to have in mobile. I think Airmont will be a Big Deal (tm) in this space, though.

Well yes and no. Apple makes decisions like that. Samsung prefers their own cpu's as well. Sure they use Intel where it makes sense, but so long as there isn't a significant difference they will use their own chips. Intel needs to make sure there is a significant difference. I don't think they succeeded on the android side of things yet, but definitely on the windows side this will be an excellent choice.

Is it really that hard to put bay trail into a 7" device?

7" bay trail with 1920x1200 resolution IPS or PLS screen with 6hrs or more battery run time.
That would be the ultimate mobile computer right there.

$199 nexus 7 should be way cheaper and much more useful.
  • meacupla - Wednesday, September 11, 2013 - link

yes, because nexus 7 can run x86 programs.
  • dwade123 - Wednesday, September 11, 2013 - link

    "much more useful."
Like running the latest fart apps and imaginary word processors.
  • damianrobertjones - Monday, September 16, 2013 - link

May I simply state, "Baa haa haa haaa"
Far more useful? What planet do you come from?
  • pSupaNova - Friday, September 27, 2013 - link

Earth, Dreaming about running x86 Apps on a 8inch tablet is silly.

Android/IOS are much more capable in that form factor
  • flyingpants1 - Saturday, September 14, 2013 - link

Why? 8" is fine. It needs a clamshell-style detachable keyboard now, so you can put it in your coat pocket or bag and have a 100% functional x86 windows computer anywhere.

I can't keep buying every single device on the market. I want one phone (5"), one tablet (8"), and one laptop (14.1").
  • meacupla - Sunday, September 15, 2013 - link

7" can be fit inside a jacket pocket, 8", not so much.

I've never been using Microsoft Windows and suddenly thought, "Damn, this thing would be a lot more useful if it ran Android apps!"

But I always think the reverse: "Damn, if only my useless Android device could run Windows apps!"

Android does very little. And it doesn't even do it great - it's just good. Microsoft really could take over, they just need to stop dicking around.

Android does a lot, I have challenged myself to program a game just using a tab AIDE/PhotoShop Touch are my weapons of choice and it going along well with the help of LibGDX.

Dell is not that efficient in making Tablets, Samsung and Apple has wide range of products compared to Dell.
